Intelligence Operations during Operation BANNER

Speaker: Ewan Duncan

For almost four decades, Operation BANNER saw the British Armed Forces deployed in Northern Ireland during one of the longest and most complex military operations in modern British history.

Behind the familiar images of soldiers on patrol, checkpoints and street confrontations lay an extensive and often secret world of intelligence gathering, surveillance and covert operations. Intelligence became central to the campaign, involving military units, specialist organisations and close cooperation with other security agencies.

This talk explores the development and use of intelligence during Operation BANNER, examining the methods, people and organisations involved, the challenges of operating in a complex environment and the crucial role intelligence played in shaping military operations.

A fascinating insight into the less visible side of the Northern Ireland campaign and the intelligence war behind the headlines.

Dien Bien Phu and the End of French Colonial Rule in Indo-China

Speaker: Rupert Hague-Holmes

In the spring of 1954, a remote French military outpost in the mountains of northern Vietnam became the setting for one of the most decisive battles of the twentieth century.

Confident that their fortified position at Dien Bien Phu could withstand a Viet Minh assault, French commanders found themselves surrounded by an increasingly powerful enemy force under General Vo Nguyen Giap. What followed was a desperate 56-day siege involving intense artillery bombardment, determined resistance and extraordinary feats of logistical organisation by the Viet Minh.

On 7 May 1954, the French garrison finally surrendered. The defeat marked the effective end of French colonial ambitions in Indo-China and set in motion events that would profoundly influence the future of Vietnam and ultimately draw America into a much larger conflict.

This talk examines the campaign, the key military decisions, the personalities involved and the reasons behind the French defeat, as well as the far-reaching political consequences.

A dramatic story of military ambition, strategic miscalculation and a battle that changed the course of modern history.
