Wellington’s Navy; The Royal Navy’s role in the Peninsular War (1808 to 1814).
The navy’s role is relatively poorly understood, but without it there would have been no victory over the French. From landing Wellington in 1808, rescuing Moore at Coruña, supplying all the British, Portuguese and Spanish army’s requirements; tying up large numbers of French troops on costal defence; commando style raids to blow up bridges and gun batteries. By denying the sea to French costal vessels, the Royal Navy forced the French to use Spain’s dreadful roads thus ensuring the French army was ill supplied to conduct the campaign.
